Black and White

As much as I love color, I have lately been drawn to black and white-- in design, in photography, in fabrics, in clothes.  Below are a couple of my favorite black and white photographs that I've come across lately.  Black and white photographs make the photo easier to take in because your eye is not distracted by color chaos.  I find b & w photography to be striking and they make me stop and stare longer than other photos.  Anyways-- check these out! They are beautiful.

Happy Tuesday friends!

A busy week at Marjorie Johnston & Co.

I've been entirely absent this week due to so many events happening this week at the studio.  This past week we transformed our little studio and store into an art gallery for artist Amy Pleasant. Amy is from Birmingham but she shows her work in New York.  Her work is contemporary but also soft and intricate. I love that each figure tells its own story.  Check out the pictures below and be sure to look out for the name Amy Pleasant.  She is an amazing talent!

And then yesterday, we had Anne Grace Papers fly in from Dallas for a pop-up shop of all their wonderful stationary, gifts, and Christmas cards. The girls from Anne Grace were truly a joy to work with. We were honored to have them in our shop, and their product was a huge hit!!

Anyways both events were great because they allowed us to interact with other creative people! I learned so much from interacting with both of these groups of people.  I hope you enjoy these photos.

Happy Wednesday!

Favorite Finds: 10.14.13

Here are my favorite finds this week.  Fall is my favorite season so I am loving every bit of this Fall weather.  My list of favorites reflects the crisp air, the need for cozy & warm clothes, and the changing trees.  I hope all of y'all are having happy Mondays.  I'm headed to a junior high football game this afternoon and then to eat Mexican food... its a good Fall day.

Inspired by: Tammy Connor & Kiawah Island

Being from Birmimgham, I am always excited to learn about someone from Birmingham doing something wonderful.  Tammy Connor is one standout example of someone from Birmingham who is doing just that. She is quite an inspiration to someone in the same field from the same place, and we are fortunate to have her in our city. She is an interior designer with an incredible talent.  As a testament to her success, she was recently featured as one of TRADhomes 10 designers to watch.  I think the people at TRADhome perfectly captured Tammy's style when they described it as: "casual classic ... infused with Southern elegance and charm."  I love her designs because they are calm, classic, and delicate, but they still look like real homes where real people live with their dogs, kids, messes, toys, etc. Because if a home isn't livable, its not really a home. So check out these photos and see how Tammy flawlessly transforms a home on Kiawah island into a charming home for a family.

sidenote-- check out the light fixture in the last picture... amazing. that, my friends, is cool design... Also- note how the fixture echoes the architecture of the room and draws your eyes up in a room which soars upwards with high walls.
